Time Travel: Spouse Encounter!
This week's travel edition is about meeting our husbands. Was it love at first sight?
I must say that it was major crush at first sight for me when I first met Kerry. Our relationship kind of had two different starting points dictated by my age! I first met him when I was a Junior in High School. He was in college folks. Yes.... he is 6 years older than me. I was a kid in the youth group, and he was a college intern that was working at our church. (He was at a Bible school that my church partnered with quite frequently). I was actually dating a different guy (more my age) but had such a crush on Kerry. He happened to be dating the sister of the guy I was dating! Very strange. We were just friends of course because Kerry is a very proper guy! Later he told me that I had caught his eye but I was his Chinese girl: Too Young! To hear my mom and Kerry tell it, I was observed batting my eyes at him quite frequently! ;) What captured my heart, besides his caring spirit, good listening ear, and love for God, was his wink. Yes, he would wink at me and melt my heart!!! He hung out with our high school /college group once in a while and that is what kept my hopes alive! But alas, at the end of that year, he left to back to the midwest where he was from to audition for an evangelistic singing team. He made the team and then traveled and sang for a year. I finished high school, thinking about him once in awhile but never thinking I would see him again. Then I went to college for my Freshman year and maintained a tragic relationship with another guy from my youth group growing up (long distance) who had been in a diving accident and had become a quadriplegic. I came home for summer break, got a boring full time job and resigned myself to spinsterhood--after all I was 19 with no boyfriend in sight!
And then God worked out a funny little situation. My sister was dating a guy who played saxophone in a Christian band comprised of several college guys from my church. They were invited to come and perform in a park as part of a large youth outreach that a local youth director was putting together. They accepted, my sister went along to watch and low and behold, that youth director was my Kerry!!!!! He recognized my sister and came over to talk to her and managed to get out of her that, no, I was not dating anyone. She came home that night all excited to tell me the news that Kerry was back in the area and that she had told him I would be calling him soon!! WHAT???? I did NOT call boys. I was mortified--and she said I needed to because this was my last chance!!!
Well.....I did call him. The next night. After I had washed my face and gotten in to my jammies for the evening. It was 7:00p.m., people, and I was ready for bed-does that tell you about my life? He answered the phone and invited me to the movies that night!! I never have gotten ready for a date that fast in my life. :) The rest is history---we started dating in August, got engaged in February (I made it fall quarter of my sophomore year before dropping out to get a job and to be closer to Kerry)
(me in my little studio apartment)
and married that next September. Twenty-five years and four kids later, we are still together and I still have a little crush on him!
