Books! Gotta love them.....

From Stacy at Exceedingly Mundane

There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?

I thought I would post a response on my site.....

Reading is a funny thing sometimes. What makes a person a reader--a lover of stories and words? I don't think you need to have been raised by readers... I have been a bookworm all my life---I still remember sitting on the couch with my mom reading to her out of a reader from school way back when I was in 1st grade. That is 39 years ago!! I have no idea why I became an avid reader---I don't have memories of my parents reading all the time, nor did they read to my sister and I all that often--and almost never, once we could read ourselves....

I have to admit that I didn't read a ton when I was in college or in the early years of motherhood--oh, I read alright, just not books above a toddler or pre-schooler's level of comprehension. I could recite Good Night Moon by heart for many years. When we home-schooled , read alouds were a very integral part of our day. Each of my children has become an avid reader. Very few things warm my heart more than seeing my child engrossed in a book.

My return to avid reader status really occurred right after 9-11. I don't know why, but all of a sudden I found myself retreating to my room at night to read, rather than watch t.v. I don't think I watched any t.v. that year. Maybe I just needed to escape a bit? I don't know, but it sure hasn't been a bad thing.

I actually married a man who was not a reader. He read a little bit of non- fiction but didn't really like fiction. That is, until I talked him into reading The Hobbit one year on vacation. That was it--he just needed to find the genre he enjoyed--fantasy and sci-fi!

How about you? Do you go a whole year without reading even 1 book? If so, then life IS too busy. Slow down, pick up a book and get lost in the pages..

Great pictures of Sam reading. I just love seeing a kid engrossed in a book. I love this entry! Infact, I think I'll will work on one of my own today. Great subject.

Ooh, what a wonderful, well thought out and well-written answer to that meme! I usually like the question at "Booking Through Thursday" and this week was no exception. You definitely said it a lot better than I could have!

Love the photos and love that your kids read. Your hubby too. Mine is too engrossed in golf to pick up a book. :)

Happy Reading!!!
