ACK!!!

Houston... I think we have found the mystery smell!!!

I haven't mentioned anything about the terrible smell that has been emanating from my refrigerator the past several days because, well frankly, I am embarrassed. The smell was getting worse and worse--to the point that I didn't want anyone to open the fridge because it made the kitchen/dining/family room REEK. I have been tearing my hair out--cleaning out the produce drawer, throwing away anything that look kind of old. We even emptied the ice container and got rid of the ice in case it was getting that old ice smell..nothing! Nothing made a difference. Until today. Kerry was off work and was determined to figure out the mystery STENCH--because, yes, today it reached STENCH status!

Turns out I had a small piece of ginger root on one of the shelves in the door. It was going bad! It didn't smell anything like ginger, a smell I normally enjoy. NO, this smelled like a drawer full of rotting, liquefying, cucumbers, peas, lettuce or green peppers.

So a lesson for you all--don't keep ginger around too long and if you notice a bad smell, that little root might be your culprit.

I am off now to go sanitize--and deodorize my lunch bag which has been soaking up and holding on to all those bad fumes for the past 1/2 a week.

Cheers.....

Glad you found where the smaell was coming from. My favorite dressing is made with ginger- you know the japanese ginger dressing. Yum!

I had the same experience with a potato in my pantry! We had just moved into the house and within days the pantry took on a horrible smell. In desperation I finally wiped out the entire pantry with bleach, painted it!, convinced it must've have been an "old pantry smell". When I was putting my groceries back, I found a rotten potato in the bottom of the bag. Had no idea it could smell that gross.

Well, I'm really glad you found it! I don't think I've ever bought "real" ginger. I buy the ground up stuff in a bottle (seems easier!) and so I don't know what real ginger root smells like. I'm so glad you found it - and your kitchen/fridge got a little extra cleaning as a result. :)

Have a great day!
