Time Travel Tuesday: Halloween Edition

Annie, who hosts Time Travel Tuesday, has this to say about this week's topic:

This week we're traveling back to our most memorable Halloween. Did you dress up and go door to door growing up? What was your favorite costume?

I have many fond memories of Halloween:

**The excitement of dressing up--in the beginning we got those cheap grocery store costumes that came with a mask you could hardly breath through and maybe a cape. Later, as we got older and my mom reached her creative stride, we got homemade costumes. I don't remember many of them, but I do have a memory of her making me a Little Red Riding Hood costume one year!

I am 4 1/2 in this picture (below) and my sister is 2 1/2. Notice the mask- -WHAT was my mom thinking ??? LOL! I was her little girly girl--where was the Cinderella or Tinkerbell costumes? I guess she did make an effort to wrap me up in a sheet, to look like a ghost? It WAS a step above whatever clothing item that came with that mask I am sure!!

** The fun of carving pumpkins with my dad every year. This was always done with just my dad...

**The joy of seeing that jack-o-lantern's face begin to light up when the candle was lit inside him

** The awful, uncomfortable feeling of have to wear my coat under my costumes, because being a Seattle girl often meant rain and/or very chilly temps Halloween night!

**Rain or not, my daddy taking us girls out around the neighborhood trick-or -treating. He held the flashlight (and umbrella if needed) and always found some other dads out doing the same thing to stand around and chat with.

** Being able to wear our costumes to school on Halloween for our party. ((Now, my kid's schools celebrate the Harvest, NOT Halloween (the Friday before Halloween, no less) and no costumes are allowed--all due to the diverse population that lives in our area as we don't want to offend anyone--snort!))

**Getting chicken-pox in 3rd grade, the week before Halloween--missing my school party and being crushed, but then finding out my sister, while out trick-or-treating, asked the neighbors to fill her second bag to give to her sick big sister!

**CANDY!!! Lots and lots of yummy, normal sized candy bars, gum, suckers, and the occasional popcorn ball. Sitting on the living room floor and putting it in piles by category and counting how many of each thing we got.

Here are a couple of pictures of my very first Halloween, with my parents--I was 10 months old!

(I think if you click on them, they will enlarge)Times were so much simpler back then--I envy the innocence my parents got to have while raising us girls--no big traumatic decisions about whether or not to celebrate Halloween, or join in with the Santa story at Christmas or Easter Bunny at Easter. I guess things just didn't need to be so darn controversial all the time! I have many happy memories of my childhood, and for this I am grateful to my parents.
