it's not your mother's homework anymore

This is Sam.

See Sam doing his homework?

See Sam doing his homework on his brand new, school issued laptop computer?

Yes! Can you believe this? Every 7th grader in our school district was given a brand new laptop to use until they graduate in 5 years! Most of Sam's homework and in class work is done on his computer. It is quite a well thought out and complicated system to implement--one they have been working on in his classes since September. He was finally able to bring it home a week ago and he thinks it is pretty cool. (Even we parents had to attend two workshops and sign attendance paperwork that we were there in order for our kid to be able to bring his home) This is the first year the program is in place, and I believe next year's 7th graders will follow suit.

We apparently passed a technology bond a few years back and...voila! Computers....

Oh! Did I mention that due to the present economic situation our school district has a district wide hiring freeze in effect?....

Anybody else out there have something similar happening in their school districts?

We live in New York state (not to be confused with NYC) and things are pretty darn bad here because of the stock market "crash". They are saying that they will be laying off teachers in our already teeny weeny, underfunded school district. I can assure you, in the rural community we live in, there is not much fat to trim, if any. We live a sinewy existence. I love the computers though! What a fantastic tool! Happy Pink Saturday!
